Child Programs

One in every 4 kids in North Texas is food insecure. That's why NTFB seeks innovative and effective solutions to feed hungry children in our community. Through our Child Programs, we work with schools and social service programs in our 13-county service area to distribute and serve nutritious foods to kids in need throughout the school year and the summer months.

Food 4 Kids
Elementary school children on the free and reduced-price school meal program often face hunger when meals are not available on weekends. Working with educators to identify chronically hungry kids, the Food 4 Kids program provides backpacks full of nutritious, nonperishable, kid-friendly food to take home each Friday afternoon during the school year. The program spans 10 North Texas counties, operating in approximately 330 schools, serving 12,000 chronically hungry children each week.

Through a partnership with Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere and community supporters, Food 4 Kids expanded to serve some 1,400 children in need in that community. Click here to learn more about the Food 4 Kids - Plano initiative.

Kids Cafe
NTFB’s Kids Cafe program began in 1998 as a means to provide nutritious after-school meals to children who may not have enough to eat when they get home from school. NTFB has expanded the Kids Cafe program to include the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), as well as the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), providing after-school meals during the school year, and lunch and snacks during the summer months.  Through the Kids Cafe program, the NTFB serves on average 1,600 students after-school and nearly 2,400 children during the summer months.

School Pantry Program
Students and their families can access non-perishable items and fresh produce at local school pantries. Distribution takes place both during and after school and students who visit the school pantry leave with more than 30 pounds of food. During the 2014-2015 school term, nearly 490,000 meals were distributed through the School Pantry program.

Brighter Bites
Brighter Bites at North Texas Food BankIn 2014, NTFB joined forces with Brighter Bites to expand distribution of fresh produce in North Texas. Brighter Bites delivers fresh fruits and vegetables directly to kids, while also teaching them how to make healthier food choices. Each week during the 24-week program, qualified students take home 30 pounds of fresh produce from school, along with a healthy helping of in-class lessons and parent educational materials to get the whole family involved in healthier eating habits. There are currently 9 schools and 1,800 families enrolled in the program within the NTFB service area. For more information on Brighter Bites, visit www.brighterbites.org
